Behind every American Red Cross health and safety training program stands a team of experts ensuring what is taught is based on the latest and best in emergency science. Their guidance has an impact on everything, from course content to how to respond when disasters strike. This team’s expertise is the reason why individuals and businesses alike choose the Red Cross for their training needs. It’s also the reason why millions of Americans know how to plan and prepare for almost every emergency.
The American Red Cross Scientific Advisory Council is a 50+member panel of nationally-recognized medical, scientific, and academic experts dedicated to ensuring that the Red Cross is at the vanguard of best-science and best-practice.
With members from a broad range of professional specialties, the Council has an important advantage: a broad multidisciplinary expertise for evaluating new emergency response methods and techniques. And with on-the-ground experience, its members also bring the know-how for real-world emergencies. Whether it’s the best way to administer CPR to an unconscious co-worker or preparing your family and home for a hurricane, the Council is keeping you current.
Most people don’t know that more than 80% of cardiac arrests occur while the person is at home. This means that you are more likely to use your CPR skills to help someone close to you than assisting a stranger. Unfortunately, we can’t nor have the power to stop or control everything that happens to our loved ones, but what we can do is everything in our power to be prepared to aid in case an emergency occurs. Many think of CPR as a skill to have when dealing with elderly or a skill only if you’re in the health field – CPR is for EVERYONE. In fact, it’s a great idea for new parents and caregivers of little ones to understand the principle of infant and child CPR and first aid. Personal fitness trainers, youth sport coaches, physical education teachers and so on, should also know the importance of possessing this skill.
People die everyday from cardiac arrest due to drowning, smoke inhalation, drug overdose and many other causes mainly because family members, friends, neighbors and bystanders don’t know how to respond effectively, in order to reactivate blood flow to prevent brain damage or death while waiting for the emergency respond system to arrive.
Teachers, tutors, babysitters, wife, husband, mom, dad, sister, brother, aunt, uncle, grandparents, bus drivers, neighbors, servers, coaches, cashiers, landscapers, EVERYONE around you, closest to you and your loved ones should know CPR – Ask yourself if you can save their lives in an emergency situation like choking on their meal? But think of this… Can any of them save your child’s life, your mother’s life, your partner’s life or your life in an emergency situation?
A community-based study showed that only 5% of a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) victims were performing vigorous physical activity immediately prior to the fatal event. The vast majority, (about 80%) of the subjects that suffered a sudden cardiac arrest were performing light physical activity.
